Curriculums
“I will never forget what Blue Gum has taught me.”
– Tahlia, aged 11
At Blue Gum Montessori School in Bibra Lake we implement the ACARA-recognised Montessori National Curriculum, the approved Western Australian School Curriculum and Standards, and the Early Years Learning Framework. This ensures our Montessori curriculum meets national and state requirements while staying true to authentic Montessori principles.
The BGMS Montessori curriculum encompasses all aspects of a traditional curriculum, and more:
– Language and English
– Mathematics
– Science, Geography and History
– Development and Education of the Senses
– Practical Life (includes Home Economics)
– Visual Arts
– Performing Arts
– Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
– French
– Chinese
– Digital Technologies
The Montessori curriculum is organised into a spiral of integrated studies. This holistic approach contrasts with a traditional model in which the curriculum is compartmentalised into separate subjects, with topics only considered when a child reaches a specific grade level. At BGMS our students learn according to their readiness. The emphasis is on a deep understanding of the skills and concepts underlying any task undertaken by the child. In the early years, lessons are introduced simply and concretely and are reintroduced several times over successive years in increasing degrees of abstraction and complexity.
As children discover the wider world, many incursions and excursions are organised to complement key areas of learning. All teachers at Blue Gum Montessori School are well trained to implement the progressive Montessori curriculum and to extend children who are ready for additional challenge. All classes have access to our Learning Engagement Team, who are experienced in providing targeted support to children in all areas of their development.

Blue Gum Montessori School has approval from the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) to implement the Montessori National Curriculum as an Alternative Curriculum. Our classroom teachers use the Montessori National Curriculum as the basis for teaching and learning, while our additional requirements and specialist programs utilise the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and elements of the Western Australian Curriculum. Blue Gum Montessori School continually updates curriculum delivery in line with SCSA requirements, Non-Government Schools regulations in Western Australia, and approved changes in the National Curriculum as they are reflected in the Montessori National Curriculum. Academic reporting is reviewed and updated through the SCSA approval process to ensure compliance and high standards of learning.
